Since Indian Independence in 1947 and per Britian/India/Nepal Tripartite Agreement, the 6th Gorkha Riffles, former British Indian Army stayed back in India became the Indian army. Indian Gorkha are mainly from the ethnic tribes of Nepal who resided on some parts of India after the Greater expansion of Nepal. Indian Gorkhas too have phenomenal Military history and many Bravery awards awarded to many Indain Gorkhas, Paramvir Chakra and Maha vir Chakra to name a few of their gallantry awards.

Lieutenant Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa was one Indian Gorkha of the 1st battalion, 8 Gorkha Rifles, 1/8 GR who won the Param Vir Chakra(Indian Highest Honor Military Decoration) for his heroic actions during the 1962 Sino-Indian conflict. His short citation read:

The Sino-Indian War began in October 1962; on 21 October, the Chinese advanced to north of Pangong Lake with the objective of capturing Sirijap and Yula. Srijap 1 was a post established on the northern bank of Pangong Lake by the 1st Battalion of 8 Gorkha Rifles and commanded by Major Dhan Singh Thapa. Soon the post was surrounded by greatly superior Chinese forces. Major Thapa and his men held the post and repelled three attacks before eventually being overrun. The survivors, including Thapa, were taken as prisoners of war. For his gallant actions and his efforts to motivate his men under fire he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.

Thapa was released from captivity after the war ended.

What an Heroic Act by this Legendary Indian Gorkha, hence we at KH have a Khukuri under his name to honor him and for his courage and bravery to Live On.
